Music Has Power
Schnurmacher Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing partners with the internationally-renowned Institute for Music and Neurologic Function (IMNF) to provide music therapy services to its residents. Based on more than 30 years of clinical research, this program benefits those with physical and neurological conditions, such as stroke, brain injury, Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, and depression.
The music therapy program at Schnurmacher offers patients clinical music therapy techniques to help meet rehabilitation goals. We offer a Musical Ambulation Program where a music therapist works with a wheelchair-bound patient that has the ability to walk, using rhythmic and melodic cues to coordinate movement. This type of therapy is designed to help individuals improve their ability to walk. We also offer a program that combines music therapy with physical therapy, during which residents exercise to musical cues. These programs engage patients and help motivate them to participate in their rehabilitation process.
We also offer patients the opportunity to participate in enjoyable programs that have been carefully designed to promote wellness, enhance memory, improve communication, alleviate pain and manage stress. These include resident choirs, drumming circles, bell chime groups and other music therapy activities.
The Institute for Music and Neurologic Function at Schnurmacher has introduced an Ambulation Program for wheelchair bound patients who have the ability to walk. By using a creative approach to rhythm, an individualized music therapy program is developed to encourage a patient to stand up and walk as therapists sing and play musical instruments. Lyrics from the songs incorporate the patient’s name.
